The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM) at the University of Dhaka celebrated World Tourism Day 2025 on Wednesday, 24 September 2025, through a series of vibrant and meaningful activities on campus. This year’s global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” highlighted the vital role of tourism in ensuring a balanced and responsible future.
The celebration began with a colorful rally starting from the Faculty of Business Studies courtyard. The rally was inaugurated and led by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, accompanied by faculty members, industry representatives, and a large number of enthusiastic students.
Following the rally, a seminar was held at the Multipurpose Conference Hall. The session was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Shariful Alam Khandakar, Chairman of the THM Department. Distinguished speakers included Professor Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies; Mr. Jabed Ahmed, Presidium Member of the Center for Tourism Studies (CTS); and Advocate Mostofa Mahmud Arifee, Chairman of Chuti Resort & Chuti Group.
The seminar organizing committee was led by Professor Dr. M. Badruzzaman Bhuiyan, while the keynote paper was presented by Associate Professor Dr. Saud Ahmed. The event was moderated by Shanti Chakma, a student of the 16th batch of the department.
During his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasized that tourism is not just an economic sector; it’s deeply connected to humanity, culture, and respect for nature. He underscored the need to strengthen industry–academia collaboration to ensure sustainable growth and innovation in the tourism sector.
The entire celebration reflected the department’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices, raising awareness, and preparing future leaders for the industry.
